Keur Moussa is a locality in Senegal located about fifty kilometers east of Dakar, on the road to Kayar. Become town hall in 2014 after the act of decentralization, it is mainly known for its Benedictine abbey.
It is the chief town of the district of Keur Moussa which is part of the department of Thiès in the region of Thiès. The closest localities are Ndoyene Peul, Keur Guilaye, Keur Yakham Ndiaye, Mbirdiamm and Sandok.
In this sub-Sahelian climate, the soil is made up of fine sand. Crops (orchards, vegetable plots) are therefore very dependent on water: rainy season or irrigation. However, this becomes very expensive, because increasingly deep drilling is necessary.
The population of the Rural Community of Keur Moussa – which includes 43 villages – is estimated at 11,000 inhabitants. Together, Keur Moussa and Saint-Benoît have around 6,000 inhabitants. If Keur Moussa is best known for his monastery, the population of the village is also mainly Muslim. Its average age is low. Saint Benoît is a small, predominantly Catholic village whose inhabitants come from other backgrounds and whose presence is due to work.
The Abbey convent mass celebrated on weekdays at 11:15 a.m. (GMT) and on Sunday at 10 a.m. attracts many worshipers. Many tourists come to listen to the songs and the kora, but also to buy the local products obtained by the monks: goat cheese, broilers, fruits (oranges, mandarins, grapefruits, mangoes, etc.).
